Overview
Pennsauken Country Club, just across the river in New Jersey, brings a classic public golf vibe with a layout that balances playability and challenge. I played it from the blue tees at 6,250 yards, rating 70.6, slope 129 as part of an Amateur Golf Society (AGS) event. From the start, the atmosphere was chill — players working on their short game, others hanging by the restaurant patio overlooking the 18th green. It set the tone for a fun round at a well-kept track that’s clearly loved by locals.
Course Conditions
The greens were in excellent shape — slightly soft, rolling at a moderate pace, and consistent all day. Fairways looked fantastic, lush and grown in well, with only a blemish or two across the 18 holes. Tee boxes were solid; the par 3s showed some wear, which is expected for a public course, but nothing to complain about. Overall, it felt like the course was cared for and maintained with pride.
Playability & Design
Pennsauken’s design keeps you on your toes. The front nine is more open and forgiving, letting you swing away without too much punishment, while the back nine tightens up with hazards and spots where you can quickly lose strokes. Greens feature several false fronts that force you to hit it solid or risk rolling back down. The standout hole is the 248-yard par-3 7th, the #1 handicap hole on the course — a beast that requires all of your focus.
Pace of play was fair, wrapping up in just under 4.5 hours for a 1:30 tee time.
Amenities & Practice Facilities
One thing Pennsauken lacks is a driving range, but they make up for it with great short game areas. The putting green is large, realistic, and mirrored the course conditions perfectly. The chipping green was equally impressive, offering slopes and flats to practice a variety of shots. The pro shop is well-stocked with Pennsauken-branded gear, and the clubhouse is mid-renovation, with clear improvements already made in the restaurant space. Sitting outside by the 18th green is a nice touch after a round.
Value
Here’s where Pennsauken really shines. I snagged a GolfNow deal for $50 on a weekday, with the standard rate being $65 — both are excellent for the quality of this course. On weekends, however, the price jumps to $95, which feels a little steep. If you can score a hot deal, it’s a no-brainer.
Final Thoughts
Pennsauken Country Club is a strong public course that offers excellent conditions, fun variety, and a welcoming atmosphere. It’s a little too challenging for beginners, but mid- to low-handicappers will find it a great place to test their game. Look for those hot deals, enjoy the well-kept greens and fairways, and settle in on the patio after your round — Pennsauken is a course worth keeping in the rotation.
