Overview

Mountain View Country Club, located in Boalsburg, PA, is a well-maintained track that blends variety with playability. I played it from the blue tees at 6244 yards, rating 70.9, slope 128, on Sunday, August 17th, with a 1:54 p.m. tee time. This round was unique — I teed off as a single, staying one hole behind the final match of the club championship per the marshals’ instruction. The atmosphere was serious with spectators lining up behind the leaders, but it was also a cool experience to play alongside a championship environment. Adding to the vibe was the gorgeous backdrop of rolling mountains, which made for some truly scenic moments throughout the round.

Course Conditions

From the start, the course looked lush and dialed in. Fairways were soft from heavy rain but still in excellent shape with no pooling or standing water — a testament to how well this course drains. The bunkers were outstanding, filled with consistent, perfect sand. Greens were rolling on the quick side early before slowing down after the weather delays, and they were a bit tricky to read at times. Tee boxes were in solid shape across the board.

Playability & Design

Mountain View offers a really fun layout with plenty of variety. You’ll find doglegs that force you to shape shots, long par 3s, reachable par 5s, and even a drivable par 4 that tempts you off the tee. Elevation changes add another layer of challenge and keep the course from feeling repetitive.

That said, course navigation can be tricky for first-time players. A couple of holes aren’t immediately obvious on where to head next, so having a GPS or asking locals for guidance is helpful. Still, once you know your way around, it’s an enjoyable and fair design.

Pace of play for me was unusual — two weather delays stretched the round to about 6.5 hours. Without the delays, pace would have been perfectly fine, and marshals did a great job keeping players informed throughout.

Amenities & Practice Facilities

Mountain View shines in its practice areas. The driving range is solid, the chipping area offers realistic slopes and flat lies to dial in the short game, and the separate putting green rolled a bit faster than the course greens, which was helpful prep. The pro shop is small and only carries the essentials, but the bar and restaurant are excellent — definitely a spot worth hanging out after your round.

Value

This is where Mountain View really stands out. I paid $40 for a Sunday afternoon tee time, which is an absolute steal given the quality of the course and conditions. The value here is phenomenal, and if you’re in State College or planning a trip to Penn State, this course should absolutely be on your list.

Final Thoughts

Mountain View Country Club combines great conditions, strong variety, beautiful mountain scenery, and an unbeatable value. The course is well-maintained, offers something for every type of golfer, and drains exceptionally well even after heavy rain. Between the solid layout, great staff, and excellent practice facilities, this is a must-play if you’re in the area.
