I got out to Frog Hollow Golf Club in Middletown, Delaware on April 1 for my third time playing the course, and once again, it delivered exactly what I’ve come to expect: a really fun, challenging layout that keeps you thinking the entire round. It was sunny, 80 degrees, pace of play was right around 4 hours, and as usual, Frog Hollow found a way to humble me and reward me in the same afternoon.
I played it solo and ended up carding an 80, with a steady 40 on the front and 40 on the back. The stat line was not exactly a ball-striking clinic either: 15% fairways hit, 33% greens in regulation, 35 putts, and 2 penalties. But that is part of what made this round such a good snapshot of Frog Hollow. This is not the kind of course where you can just spray it around, sleepwalk your way through 18 holes, and expect a stress-free score. It asks questions all day long.
The vibe at Frog Hollow
One thing Frog Hollow does really well is deliver good value without sacrificing challenge. The staff was friendly and welcoming, the overall vibe was laid back and relaxed, and it is the kind of place where you can have a great time while still feeling like you are getting a serious test of golf.
The practice setup is solid too. The range is mats only, which is not everyone’s favorite, but the practice green is excellent and does a really good job representing what you are about to see on the course. That matters here, because the greens are no joke. They are hilly, quick, and the pin locations can make things very interesting in a hurry.
My round recap
The day started in pretty ordinary fashion with a bogey on the 1st, which felt like a harmless enough opening note. Then came hole 2, and things immediately got a lot more memorable.
I hit my tee shot right and hit a house. Not near a house. Not toward a house. A house. That was easily the funniest moment of the day, mostly because it felt like the round could have gone off the rails right there. But somehow the ball bounced down and stayed in play, which opened the door for one of the most ridiculous birdies I’ve made in a while. After that chaos off the tee, I hit a 5-iron to the back of the green on the par 5 and two-putted for birdie. Golf makes absolutely no sense sometimes, and that is part of why we love it.
That birdie settled things down and really set the tone for the rest of the day. I had to grind, but in a good way. No doubles or worse on the card, which I was happy about, especially on a course like this. Frog Hollow does a nice job of making you earn your score. Even when the layout looks manageable, there is enough trouble, enough shape to the greens, and enough shot value to keep you locked in mentally.
What the course does well
This is where Frog Hollow shines. The layout is insanely fun. It tests every part of your game and keeps you engaged from start to finish. There are plenty of courses where a few holes blend together. That is not really the case here. Frog Hollow gives you a variety of looks and asks for different shots throughout the round, which makes it memorable.
The bunkers were in fantastic shape, which stood out right away. The tee boxes, especially from the tips, were in good condition with no complaints. The fairways had some wear in spots, but overall they were in good shape and still very playable. More than anything, it felt like one of those courses where the condition is solid, but players also need to do their part and take care of it by repairing divots and treating the course the right way.
The rough had some thick areas, but overall it was fair. Misses were penalized without feeling ridiculous. That is a good balance.
And then there are the greens. These are the defense mechanism of Frog Hollow. Fast, sloped, and full of movement. If you are above the hole or not paying attention to where the pin is tucked, things can get sideways in a hurry. The practice green gave a good preview, but once you are out there in the round, you really feel how demanding the surfaces are.
Standout holes
My favorite hole on the course is 14, the par 3 over the water. It is one of those holes that gets your full attention the second you step onto the tee. It is visually strong, the club selection matters, and the green is tough enough that even if you hit it, you are not automatically walking away with par. It is just a really good golf hole.
Hole 16 deserves a mention too. It is a long par 3 where I hit 3-wood off the tee, which tells you everything you need to know. Tough hole, no shortcuts, and another example of Frog Hollow forcing you to execute.
Then there is 17, which was the toughest hole of the day for me. There is basically no room to miss. Go right and you are in thick grass with tall trees blocking you out. Go left and you are in the woods. It is the kind of hole that makes you stand on the tee and think, “Alright, let’s just survive this one.”
Best recovery of the day
The best save of the round came on hole 11, a par 5 with water that has to be cleared. I hit it right into the drink and had to take a drop near the red stakes. Not exactly the position you draw up. But from there, I hit a 3-wood pin high onto the fringe and managed to two-putt for par. That was probably my favorite golf moment of the day because it felt like a real grind-it-out save, and on a day where I was trying to keep the round together, that kind of par matters.
The one that got away
By the time I got to 18, I had put together a really solid, scrappy round. I gave myself about a 20-foot birdie putt for 79, and honestly, just being in that position felt awesome after grinding all day. It was a good putt, just not one that dropped. Missing a chance to break 80 always stings a little, but it was still the kind of finish that leaves you walking off thinking, “Alright, I’ll take that.”
Final thoughts
Frog Hollow is a course I would absolutely come back and play again. In fact, I already know I will. It has a laid back atmosphere, good value, and a layout that is genuinely fun while still being challenging enough to keep better players interested. If you are looking for an easy walk in the park, this may not be your spot. But if you want a course that makes you think, tests your game, and gives you a lot of bang for your buck, Frog Hollow is well worth the trip.
My score for Frog Hollow: 7.9/10
Would I come back? 100%
